Armchairs

Armchairs

    Ayana

    Naoto Fukasawa

Minimalist and innovative, the Ayana collection becomes a new chapter in the story that connects B&B Italia to Naoto Fukasawa. It sees wood as the protagonist, interpreted in an unusual way, witha pleasant oriental touch. If the depths and heights are a clear reference to the south-east Asian tradition, the backrest recalls a Swedish wall bar, an exercise equipment turned into a load-bearing element. Thanks to this solution, the elements of the Ayana collection can be enjoyed and appreciated at 360 degrees, discovering on each side a new elegant interplay of intersections and proportions. Two and three seat sofas and the armchair have armrests at different heights. The armchair armrest is higher to guarantee a more ergonomic seat. The sofa armrest, which is lower, can be combined with a cushion that is easy to be fastened and removed, and helps to lie down more comfortably if necessary. The upholstery of this collection stands out for the individual cushions, all covered with waterproof fabrics. Ayana’s warm minimalism is completed with a chair, a dining table and a low table. The dining chair recalls the stylistic features of the other seats, for a perfect family feeling, with the structure in natural teak wood and two generously padded cushions covered in fabric. The table stands out for its oval top in serpentine, a typical stone of the Alps. The supporting structure in natural teak appears light but is extremely robust, able to resist weather and support the heavy top. Even the coffee table has a round section structure in natural teak, with a top in serpentine. Its broad dimensions allow to create a pleasant convivial atmosphere in outdoor settings. Ayana is a project with a green soul. The teak used to make the structures is FSC certified (Forest Stewardship Council) and all the materials that make up the various elements of the series, at the end of the product’s life cycle, can be separated and disposed of with respect for the environment.

    Canasta

    Patricia Urquiola

Vienna straw, with its geometric decorative pattern, is the inspiration behind Canasta, the Spanish term for basket. Enlarged to macro proportions, the design is applied to armchairs with a striking effect, available with a high or low backrest. Both are characterised by polyethylene fibre ribbons woven onto a powder-coated aluminium frame. Classic in style but with a contemporary sense of plasticity, Canasta is a hyper-decorative collection, ideal for use at the edge of a swimming pool or in a luxuriant garden. In addition to armchairs, the family also includes sofas, tables, small tables, and other furnishings.

    Canasta ’13

    Patricia Urquiola

Canasta ’13 by Patricia Urquiola is given a tortora melange makeover with the new polyethylene fibre, creating an interlacing that evokes the designer’s Crinoline collection. The sofas, armchairs and small armchairs all feature new fabrics and are accompanied by small tables that harmonise with the new colours.

    Charles Outdoor

    Antonio Citterio

The Charles Outdoor armchair, part of the homonymous series of outdoor seating, maintains the characteristics that have made the Charles indoor seating system a classic with a decidedly contemporary taste. Indeed, the system features the same slim frame, flexibility and signature design of the inverted “L” shaped feet. With its rigorous, timeless aesthetic, it stands out for its surface created by an open interlacing polypropylene ribbon.

    Crinoline

    Patricia Urquiola

With its enveloping, feminine lines, Crinoline is a series of outdoor seats whose very name echoes romantic nineteenth-century ladies’ skirts. The armchair with a high backrest is characterised by a wide hollow base, also echoed in the seat and in the curvature of the back. It comes in two versions: with a polyethylene fibre interlacing or in two colours of abaca for base and seat. The backrest of high armchair is made even more precious and romantic by a floral interlacing motif. The small armchair is characterised by a curved double shell silhouette with polyethylene fibre interlacing. The seat cushion is upholstered in a wide range of outdoor fabrics. The Crinoline series also includes small armchairs, chairs and stools.

Its fully padded seat is accompanied by a metal frame backrest that supports the original weave, creating a special play of fullness and emptiness. The large weave pattern, made of tortora coloured twisted polyethylene fibres, makes the design unique, respecting the designer’s idea of lightness, transparency and puts the furnishings in an open “dialogue” with the surrounding environment. Fat-Sofa Outdoor consists of six types, ranging from two height variants of the armchair, from the linear sofa to a large relax island, to a range of different sizes of ottomans.

    Oh, it rains!

    Philippe Starck

The very first collaboration between B&B Italia and Philippe Starck leads to the birth of a sofa and an armchair, both with impressive dimensions and a highly scenographic presence, that surprisingly combine an unusual shape and an unexpected function, with a name that really attracts attention. Oh, it rains! is a piece of considerable impact, destined to last over time and to be talked about, but also to be used in the most unexpected ways and contexts. Philippe Starck started his research for this project by going back to the origins of outdoor furniture, that of nomads and soldiers: desert tents and field equipment, colonial colors and very light materials, essential shapes with functions connected with rapid action. We notice Oh, it rains! right away for its large backrest. It isn’t a simple decorative element, though. It acts like a wall or a partition to create an intimate and private setting, and, when necessary, it folds down on top of the seat and – voilà – the seat and cushions are covered and protected. Colours and materials go hand in hand with the initial concept and the collection introduces colonial shades and raffia-effect waterproof fabrics. The backrest is proposed as a surface to be personalized through the choice and combination of fabrics. The collection is enhanced by optional cushions that guarantee extra comfort and a dynamic look to this large object, suitable for private settings and also for outdoor areas in hotels and lounge. From a technical standpoint, the backrest is made with a double layer of water-repellent fabric, which makes it 100% waterproof. For this reason Oh, it rains! can be covered with any type of outdoor fabric present in the B&B Italia collection. It is also possible to choose the version with a side table integrated into the structure, available in natural teak wood or Mediterranean stone.

    Ray Outdoor Fabric

    Antonio Citterio

Ray Outdoor Fabric features an interlacing ribbon pattern, created using polypropylene fibre that are resistant to UV rays and weathering. The range of colours, particularly suitable for outdoor environments, varies from turquoise to blue and from acid green to tortora through to bright bordeaux. Ray Outdoor Fabric is available with extruded aluminium feet or teakwood base. The “Natural” and “Fabric” collections consist of sofas available in two depths as well as modular elements such as terminal elements or chaise longue and armchairs. The sunbed with wheels only features in the “Fabric” collection.

    Ray Outdoor Natural

    Antonio Citterio

After their success indoors, the Ray seats by Antonio Citterio now include two new outdoor versions, namely the “Natural” and “Fabric” collections of seats. Ray Outdoor Natural features an interlacing rope pattern reminiscent of Manila hemp, in perfect harmony with nature, and is created with textilene, making it perfect for outdoor use. Ray Outdoor Natural is available with an extruded aluminium feet or teakwood base. The “Natural” and “Fabric” collections consist of sofas available in two depths as well as modular elements such as terminal elements, chaise longue and armchair.

The traditional typology of the outdoor bench is revamped with contemporary language. It’s an impressive piece that resembles a sculpture. The teakwood used for the frames is FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) certified and all the materials that make up the various elements of the series are designed to be separated and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner at the end of the product’s life cycle.

    Borea

    Piero Lissoni

With its modern line, Borea is a small, stackable dining armchair in painted aluminium for outdoor use. Particularly attractive is the lower part of the frame that curves slightly outwards as it rests on the ground. The metal bending and curving processes used exploit techniques typically used in the aeronautical sector and transport them into the world of outdoor furniture, giving life to a product with an unmistakable style. Comfort is ensured by extremely soft cushions that are also environmentally sustainable. The padding is in 100% polyester fibre obtained from the recycling of PET plastic bottles and surrounds a polyurethane section of different densities. Crinoline

    Patricia Urquiola

Can you picture the dresses that women wore in the 1800s? Full, bell-shaped skirts held by crinolines (rigid underskirt garments) were spectacular “micro-architectures” commonly seen in living rooms everywhere.

All of the chairs in the Crinoline collection are designed to reflect this elegant look: the wide curve of the base is repeated in the seat and the curve of the backrest.

“The curved part gives it a double-shell silhouette,” said Patricia when describing the soft lines of the series. Crinoline outdoor chairs and armchairs are comfortable, feminine and romantic.

Crinoline is an innovation in taste. An opening. A product that encloses all of the sensitivity of a team working in collaboration with the B&B Italia Research and Development Centre. We left from Italy for the Far East with an aluminium structure: light, recyclable, resistant, completely rustproof and therefore perfect for outdoor use, and everything concerning the weave was changed. The creative process took shape through comparisons with the strengths and weaknesses of manual techniques and love for these traditional arts. Expert weavers tried time and again, but the perfect result escaped us. The woven cover of Crinoline emerged like the Arianna’s cloth: “I gave birth to it with the people who were working on it with me,” said Patricia. As a result, it is a collation of codes and languages. The 1800s, digital information, technology and hand crafted excellence.

    Erica ’19

    Antonio Citterio

The Erica collection of sofas, armchairs and small chairs that was so successfully launched in 2017 has been enhanced by new sofas, still based on the same characteristic curved backrest and interlacing as before but offering a deeper seat and lived-in appearance. The sofas come in three extra-comfortable sizes – the 170 and 216 cm styles with a 96 cm deep seat and the 153 cm version with a 140 cm deep seat – and the cushions have a different type of upholstery giving an even softer and more natural look and making them even more inviting. The unusual colour juxtaposition of frame and interlacing in anthracite, tortora or a frame in sage with natural coloured interlacing can be complemented by a vast range of cushion covers, in an array of tones and designs, all co-ordinating with each other. There is also a chair with armrests with an innovative interlaced backrest.

The structures, available in sophisticated shades, is completed by two padded cushion that define the shape and provide even more comfort. New Arrivals

    Allure O’ Outdoor

    Monica Armani

The Allure O’ Outdoor table keeps the graceful strength of the design of the indoor version, clearly visible in the shape of the top and the balance between straight lines and sinuous curves. It is proposed with square and rectangular tops and in two heights to accompany the Flair O’ Outdoor chairs but also the sofas and chairs in the other families of the B&B Italia Outdoor collection. The base-frame is made of moulded cement, a choice that gives the table extreme solidity and an appearance that easily adapts to any outdoor furnishing situation. The tops are available in lightened concrete and a surprising glossy glazed stoneware, a nostalgic material, used in the past for kitchen cooking surfaces. Allure O’ Outdoor is produced with an artisanal technique, after a slow, single firing process at a temperature of 250 °C, the stoneware is manually glazed by airbrush, a technique that allows for a unique depth and variety of colour.

    Nooch

    Piero Lissoni

After the great success of Borea, Piero Lissoni and B&B Italia continue to pursue research and sustainability in the outdoor sector, creating Nooch, a modular seating system whose name is inspired by the tropical botanical garden of Nong Nooch in Thailand. Its key feature is the tubular structure in recycled aluminium, a light and strong material, completely recyclable. A choice inspired by simplicity, which recalls elementary tubular structures and ennobles them with a design that pays attention to every detail. The intersection of the structural elements represents the iconic feature of this collection, with the particular elbow curve achieved by the way the aluminium bends. A design and engineering detail that combines function and beauty. Nooch is a system that offers the possibility of creating infinite combinations from two base modules: a rectangular one and a square one. Both can be equipped with backrests and armrests and have an aluminium top with slats on which the cushions rest. The modules can be arranged as free-standing units or attached firmly together by means of special interlocking joints so as to create a variety of configurations. A series of additional top sections, to be inserted between the elements, offers even greater compositional freedom. The paddings are designed with sustainability in mind. They use regenerated materials, which are completely separable, and consist of two layers of polyurethane with different densities and firmness: one layer made of polyurethane recycled from production waste and one made of virgin bio-polyurethane, both wrapped in an outer sheath of recycled PET. The system is completed by a small round service element to be inserted between the cushions to offer further support and a particular backrest/armrest cushion to be inserted between the elements to create inverted and double-sided seats.

The Borea coffee tables, in different sizes and heights, have thin structures in painted steel rod and tops in glazed lava stone.

The Butterfly complements have an outline that perfectly follows the lines of the sofa, harmoniously flanking the seat at the top. The family consists of round, square, and rectangular low tables and a small table featuring a large weave pattern, made of tortora coloured twisted polyethylene fibres that wraps around the grey painted aluminium frame. Colosseo Outdoor

    Naoto Fukasawa

Colosseo Outdoor, like the indoor version, fits smoothly into the highly successful product category of accessories, furnishing elements that change function according to occasion and need, in this case from coffee table to ottoman. When designing this object, Naoto Fukasawa arrived at the desired shape by considering a solid in the form of an upside-down truncated cone, lightened by arch-shaped grooves that define the surface, creating an assonance with the structure of the famous Roman arena it is named after. Available in two sizes, Colosseo Outdoor is made of porcelain stoneware.

Sofas

Sofas

    Ayana

    Naoto Fukasawa

Innovative in its warm minimalism, the Ayana outdoor sofa, available in a two- and three-seater version, sees wood as the absolute protagonist. While the depths and heights are a clear reference to the south-east Asian tradition, the backrest recalls a Swedish wall bar, a piece of exercising equipment turned into a load-bearing element. Through this solution, creating an elegant interplay of intersections and proportions, the Ayana sofas can also be placed in the centre of the room. The sofa armrest can be combined with a cushion that is easy to fasten and remove and helps to lie down more comfortably if necessary

The metal bending processes used exploit techniques typically used in the aeronautical sector and transport them into the world of outdoor furniture, giving life to a collection with an unmistakable style.

    Butterfly

    Patricia Urquiola

The Butterfly modular outdoor seating system gets its name from the “butterfly” shape created by the outer corner that joins the armrest and the backrest. With its generous, sinuous lines, it responds effectively to the need for modularity and comfort, offering a free and informal use. Its modular structure is shaped around an ottoman, which is the base piece, and which, when integrated with the backrest and/or the armrest, becomes a central or terminal element, either to the left or right. The combination of these elements, using a simple joint system, makes it possible to freely set up versatile configurations, from in-line sofas to corner solutions, from front-facing to lounge layouts. Completely upholstered, Butterfly brings outdoors the quality and comfort that have always characterised the company’s indoor seating.

    Hybrid

    Antonio Citterio

After the great success of Ribes, Antonio Citterio developed some design ideas behind it and created Hybrid, an innovative new system of modular seating elements that it is so versatile it can be arranged into an almost infinite number of combinations. The key role of the textile dimension stands out immediately, with upholsteries that cover completely the generous padding, the absolute protagonist. These are typical elements of indoor furnishings, which find with Hybrid an outdoor interpretation. Hence the name of the collection, which is proposed as a real link between the inside and the outside of the house. Hybrid represents in fact the perfect furnishing element for climates and spaces that are defined by a continuous blend of inside and outside environments, with rooms that open to an en-plein-air dimension, and for living spaces integrated into terraces and gardens. The combination of opposites happens not only visually, but also through the sense of touch. Hybrid guarantees in fact the typical comfort of traditional upholstered furniture for interiors, thanks to a new type of mattress seat conceived for outdoor furnishing. The cushions are actually made with paddings with different densities, carefully designed to pleasantly accommodate the body and support it at the same time, without sinking. The supporting structures are almost invisible, and the seat seems to float a few centimeters above the floor. The solid base is formed by a frame in extruded aluminum painted in he colours sage, clay and anthracite, and is completed by a platform with fiberglass slats. The backrest conceals an aluminum structure, covered with soft polyurethane, which is in turn covered with a padded sheath, completed with a cover in waterproof fabric. The platform is available in eight sizes and two depths, while the armrest and backrest come in two heights. To guarantee further comfort to the deeper seat, the low backrest can be raised with an additional headrest cushion. Additional cushions in various sizes enrich the range, offering countless design and chromatic solutions. The Hybrid collection also includes a series of new outdoor fabrics made with mélange polypropylene yarn in five colour variants that are accented by refined trims. Choices that confirm a decisive and elegant presence for interiors and outdoor spaces.

Tables

Tables

    Ayana

    Naoto Fukasawa

The table stands out for its oval top in serpentine, a typical stone of the Alps. The supporting structure in natural teak appears light but is extremely robust, able to resist weather and support the heavy top. Ayana is a project with a green soul. The teak used to make the structures is FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) and all the materials that make up the various elements of the series, at the end of the product’s life cycle, can be separated and disposed of with respect for the environment.

Exclusively made of cement, Tobi-Ishi Outdoor comes in two colour variants, grey and anthracite.
